Chapter Sixteen

Caleb laughed as he sipped his second beer. Between them sat the remains of a pizza and a bowl of wedges. The fancy bar was busy enough that it felt safe, but not so busy that he couldn’t see the exits.

They’d jostled for the best seat when they’d arrived, but Caleb had won because he couldn’t read minds and Jay would sense the danger first, if the killer were thinking murderous thoughts.

“So there I was half-naked, with my brand-new boyfriend trying to cash in my v-card and Jonah gets home early.”

“Why weren’t you in your bedroom?”

“I don’t remember. Maybe I thought I’d seem cooler if we made out on the sofa…I was sixteen.” He shook his head, unable to remember when the memory had stopped being embarrassing and had become a fun tale to tell. “Jonah walks past, doesn’t even blink until he’s gone to the fridge and grabbed a drink and then he says, ‘I didn’t think you were a top’. That’s it. He cracks open the soft drink, takes a sip and walks out. Meanwhile I’m mortified, my boyfriend is grabbing his clothes and out the door.”

“Did Jonah ever mention it again?”

“Nope. But he did tell me exactly where the cameras in the house were and where the blind spot was.” He’d used that blind spot a few times over the next couple of years before he’d been brave enough to bring a boyfriend into the house.

“And what happened to your boyfriend?”

“We broke up the next week. For the best, he’s now a lawyer and knows nothing about shifters.” He took another swig. He wasn’t sure how he’d ended up telling that story only that he’d wanted to see Jay smile.

Jay had been nursing the same beer all night like he was expecting trouble. That story always made people laugh because everyone he’d ever met had also been caught out or nearly caught out at some point. The story had worked, because his lips had the killer curve, and his eyes had a golden glint in the warm lighting.

He reached his hand over the table and covered Jay’s, half expecting him to pull away. “You want to leave?”

Jay’s gaze flicked to their hands and Caleb felt him tense for a moment, but he didn’t move. “If you’re done.”

“Yeah, I’m done. If I stay, I’ll end up having another and then I’ll dissolve into morbid thoughts. I’d like to keep basking in your smile.”

Jay’s cheeks darkened. “You don’t have to charm me into bed.”

“But I like doing it.” And he was pretty sure that Jay liked it too because of the way he smiled and the way he looked at Caleb. He stood. “Want to hold my hand on the way out?”

Usually he wouldn’t ask, but then usually he wasn’t with a guy who was still trying to unlock the closet. And from the look on Jay’s face he’d caught at least some of that. It was easy to forget that he was a witch and that he could rummage through his head.
